Summer Bible Study: Island Life

The King had not heard from His daughter in awhile.  He had searched all through the town  and was saddened when He found her all alone in her house.  Being the gentleman that He is, He gently knocked on the door and called her name,
“My darling?  May I come in?”
She was staring out her window and was startled out of her daydream when she heard His voice.  Guilt washed over her as she realized that it had been days since she’d spent time with Him.  She frantically started thinking up excuses as to why she’d been absent.
Yet, here He was…looking for her.
“My darling?”  He called again.
She scurried to the door, “Oh!  Um, yes!  I’m here!  One second!  I’m, I’m on my way!”
A smile crept across the King’s face as He could tell the nervousness in her voice.
She swung open the door and there He was in all His grandeur.
Even after all His reassurance, she still could not fathom what she could offer Him.
“Oh gosh, I’m so embarrassed!  You wouldn’t believe how busy I have been lately!  Phone calls, meetings, endless chores.  I barely have…”
The King interrupted her with a raised hand, “Let’s take a walk.”
She threaded her arm through His and they walked slowly through the streets in her town.  The sun was starting to set but the air was warm and pleasant.
They walked in several minutes of silence until the King’s words pierced her heart, “You feel heavy.  Your heart.  It’s carrying something heavy.”
She let out a sigh realizing that she could hide nothing from Him.
Tears slowly ran down her cheeks and she finally mustered up the strength to say, “I’m very lonely.  I just don’t understand it.  I am continually surrounded by people, day in and day out.  Yet I feel like I’m doing this all alone.”
The King stopped suddenly and turned towards her.  “Oh, my darling.  My heart feels your sadness.  I too have felt loneliness.  May I encourage you for a moment?”
Her tear filled eyes turned upward to meet His as He said.
“I will never leave you or forsake you.”

Has that ever been you?
Have you ever felt like you have endless people around you, pulling you in a thousand directions, wanting every little piece you have to offer…yet you feel like there is no one but you.
Yeah, me too.
I went through a tough time of loneliness not too long ago actually and boy was it a miserable time for me.  I could throw a pity party like nobody’s business!!  I’ll share more of my story as we go on this week.
You may be an empty-nester, a professional with no one to confide in, a widow, a college student on your own, a mom with littles, or a divorcee full of hurt and broken dreams.
Loneliness knows no age, social status or ability.
You’ve heard that No Man is an Island…yet, that is exactly what the enemy wants you to believe.
That no one cares.
No one feels the way you do.
That you truly are all alone in this thing called life.
Ready?  On the count of three:
deut 318
Whatever season you find yourself in, whether it be new or old; you are not alone.
As long as you have breath in your body, if God feels far away, rest assured, He hasn’t gone away.
He will never leave you.

Heavenly Father,
A lot of times we feel like a blank face in a sea of thousands.  I pray that in the midst of all the busy that goes on in our lives that we will never forget your promise in Joshua that you will never leave us and you will never forsake us.  Regardless of our love and attention to You, Your love and attention is unconditional and never-ending.  I pray that You fill us with Your peace.  I pray that You lead us to people who will encourage us, not tear us down.  Lead us to people who need to feel Your love; love that I have already experience and am so full of that it can’t help but to spill over onto those around me.  Let loneliness end with me as I enter a new season of joy and community.  In Jesus name, Amen.
