This week’s Woman in the Word experienced a little bit of both.
The woman at the well
What exactly was she seeking?
Clearly she was thirsty.
She was there after all to get a drink from the well.
But what was her heart seeking?
We don’t know her name, but in her life a series of choices gave her a rap sheet of five husbands and a live in boyfriend.
I have the U2 song, “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” rolling through my head.
What was she looking for?
This chance encounter with Jesus gives us a glimpse into the heart of God.
How He is willing to throw out the cultural rules and social conventions of the time to go after that one.
He wasn’t supposed to talk to a woman, He wasn’t supposed to talk to a non-Jew.
But He knew that her heart was seeking a new life.
One that didn’t carry the label of “loose,” or “harlot.”
She came seeking physical water.
What she found was living water.
Jesus didn’t care about her outside; her culture, her family, or her gender.
He was seeking her heart.
She found what she had been looking for through a lifetime of failed relationships.
She would never ever be satisfied if she settled for water.
Her thirst would always come back.
She would never ever be satisfied seeking love from a new man.
Her heart would continue to be broken.
This divine encounter would forever satisfy her.
But she had to let go of what she had been seeking for so long, so she could find freedom, joy, and true love.
And as soon as she accepted this free gift of living water, she left and shared about this love she found that never ever fails.
