Thank You Colin Kaepernick

Thank You Colin Kaepernick

I know nothing about football.
In the 5th grade I cheered for the Cardinals for JFL football.
“First and 10. Do it again. Go Cardinals GO!”
I have no idea what that means.
So, I’m not a football fan, but unless you have been living in a cave for the past month or so, you probably have heard about Nike’s newest face.
Just like most issues you have two sides.
In this case, you are either the American who is loyal to our country and are appalled with Kaepernick’s stance or you are the ones who side with him and say he’s exercising his right to free speech.
Once Nike decided to make his face and his “sacrifice” front and center of their ad campaign, you again had a country divided.
Those who quickly cast their vote with their pocketbook, said, “No more Nikes in THIS house!” and set fire to their Air Jordans and comfy warm joggers.
Others said, “Um, I’ll take all the Nike things…before you set them on fire, of course.”

The internet has been littered with a practical meme parade of everyone’s take on the meaning of “sacrifice.”

As I thumbed mindlessly through Facebook it struck me…the enemy won.
Not because Nike made a brilliant business minded move that sent #nike through the roof.
Not because a spoiled over-paid football player is standing up (or kneeling) for something he believes in.
Again, the enemy won.
Again, we were divided.
Again, we were pitted against each other.
Over a shoe ad.
Really?
Nike?  Not the enemy.
Kaepernick and his beliefs?  Not the enemy.
Again, our hearts and minds were distracted from the things that are truly important.
Your brother in need.
Your best friend who’s hurting.
Your child who is lost.
Your neighbor who is struggling and wants to die.
So thank you Colin for making this ol girl realize what is important.
And Who is important.

Because eternity does not hinge on Colin Kaepernick’s beliefs or decisions.
Eternity does not depend on who Nike has a shoe deal with.
Eternity does depend on how you treat your friends.
Your family.
Those who think differently that you.
If your next door neighbor posts something about Kaepernick’s freedom of speech and you call him  everything but a white man and you’d rather be dead than live next door to a low life unAmerican  like him….
But your feed the next day says, “Praise the Lord everybody!  We’re havin revival at the 1st Church of the Redeemed and we’d love to see all God’s children there!” #JesusisLord
All God’s children except my SOB communist next door neighbor…
I tell you right now that SOB will come RUNNING to the altar.
Ahem.  Maybe not.
Help us Lord Jesus.
How You, in Your great mercy, don’t blast us off the planet….
Jesus loves Colin Kaepernick just as much as He loves Brother Jimmy who’s taken up the offering for 47 years.

God multiplies.
The enemy divides.
God gives peace.
The enemy causes anger and confusion.
God grants focus.
The enemy deals distractions.
When we as a child of God are distracted, we lose focus, we breed anger, jealousy, bitterness.
We lose.
The Kingdom loses.
And because we are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus, we are participating in a battle for our souls that Christ has already died for.
Ol Kaepernick and Nike are not going to send anyone to Hell.
But a distracted mind and unfocused heart just might.

  1. I really needed this “reminder”. Its such a rough couple weeks with inventory and problem with teammembers at work, neglecting things at home. This was a real eye opener.
